Turn this one skill into a super-power to thrive alongside AI

Lets start off on a smashingly positive note. That AI models look backwards BUT humans can look forward. We can plan ahead, course correct our behviours & act differently if we choose to but AI, LLM’s in particular, need to be given something called 'hyper-parameters' to influence it’s output.

Guess who’s giving AI these hyper-parameters - it’s us humans. So we can be ahead of the thriving game at work by applying these so called hyper-parameters into how we come across, so we can go from 'I thought I was clear' to 'Leading with Clarity'.

I have gone behind the scenes of ChatGpt output & am sharing an express list of small tweaks that you can snag & apply to Lead with Clarity.

Ready?

Tactic #1 : Priming

Priming sets the context, provides key details SO THAT Output is - tailored & accurate. AI has understood that setting the background information is REQUIRED to generate relevant response.

At work your Clarity serves ONE PURPOSE - to It helps set the stage for the desired response.

Action: Start adding a context to every conversation at work. One line will do:

Ex1. So far we have done things [….this way] but now we are [x]…

Ex2. We are meeting today because…

When you start with context - you get to bring the conversation back if it goes off track.

Tactic #2 : Response Length

How often have you heard someone say to you “Let’s not go into so much detail” or “come to the point”.

I had a few of those & I can tell you it sucked. Such comments would throw me off track & it would take me a few moments to get back to what I had to say next. Don’t let that happen to you.

AI LLMs are being trained for response length. They are being given explicit instructions for precise control on the number of words or characters in the AI-generated response.

Whilst we have tackled with the 'too much detail' comment long before AI was in sight- the challenge we face is that we now have a competitor who can fit into the brief like a satin glove on our fingers.

Now you get to snag this by doing this:

- Right off the bat - Start with ‘essentials’ or ‘must have’ in the message.

- Ask yourself, can I do with only one sentence here? (no over-explaining, re-clarifying, repeating)

- Use words like - briefly, in a nutshell - when speaking to convey the length of your message.

Tactic #3 : Temperature Control

Ever felt in a meeting “GOSH! he is all over the place…” ?

We humans can come across ‘all over the place’ but AI will never be in that situation. Thanks to their training for what’s called ‘Temperature Control’.

Temperature control parameter tells AI to balance creativity with coherence, randomness with consistency. So AI will never go off rails speaking stuff that doesnt make sense & is random. AI is being trained with 3 temerature levels (as per my last update) - Low, medium, high.

Low Temp Control - Produces more focused & cetain responses. Suitable for precision-oriented tasks and generating factual information. Ex: Write a sonnet about the Moon

Medium Control - Strikes a balance between creativity and coherence. Ideal for creative writing, brainstorming, or generating diverse ideas.

High Temperature - exploratory tasks and generating novel concepts.

Now You can apply temperature control into difefrent sections of your work. My suggestion is below.

(1) Be precise & focussed.

(2) Get Creative.

(3) Apply Blue sky thinking.

Just because AI is here, does not mean e v e r y t h i n g we do needs be creative. I hear a lot of corporate professionals think that suddenly we need to get creative for everything. Nope. If you want to get geeky, make a Pie chart of what pct of your work needs which temeperature level.

Tactic #4 : Presence Penalty

Ever been frustrated where someone in a meeting that starts with a topic & goes off track within seconds. Now there is no penalty for this in meeting rooms except people rolling their eyes off & losing interest.

But in the world of AI some bouncers are added that discourage AI from going astray. Infact they keep AI output to always be On-Topic.

It helps ensure generated content remains coherent and in line with the specified context.

What you can do ?

The next time you are speaking your part in a meeting or presenting ideas, apply bouncers to your content. Ensure that you don’t go off track so you can outshine everyone else by saying insanely On-Topic.

Tactic #5 : Presence Penalty

Have you expereinced conversations where the tone conveys so much more than if you were just reading the words off a board? Tonality plays a huge role - it can cut us off, keep us respectful towards eachother or prompt ideas for new possibilities.

Tones matter.

Now AI is being trained to produce output to convey tones, modds & emotion.

You can prompt AI to describe the plot of a horror film in a bone-chilling way or in a comical way.

If you ask ChatGPT or one of it’s cousins to tweak the email you have drafted in a formal tone to a boss, in a light hearted way for peers & with a respectful tone for your direct reports....AI will do all of that in a jiffy.

Here’s what you can do: Actively leverage the use of tones in your message including in your emails. Your tonality will play an increasingly bigger role in conveying your message, in becoming a connection breaker or connection maker.

All the very best.
