If you are upto your eyeballs with toxicity at work, if it’s eating into your wellbeing & robbing you of your vibrancy … then go ahead with whatever you have planned as your next career step, even if that includes quitting your job. You know what just isn’t working for you AND what you need to do about it.
BUT if things have just started to get annoying or are mid-range annoying, then reading below will give you a few perspectives to re-think your next steps including whether you should change jobs triggered by the annoyance at work.
I got inspired to write this post after a coaching engagement where I helped a client figure out if changing jobs was the best way out of his annoying situation at work.
His story was not awfully different from any corporate professional’s story in that – he grappled with overflowing inboxes, back-to-back meetings & had also enjoyed the high from 2 promotions he got in quick succession a few years ago. His situation turned annoying after the new CEO came on board.
BUT if things have just started to get annoying or are mid-range annoying, then reading below will give you a few perspectives to re-think your next steps including whether you should change jobs triggered by the annoyance at work.
In my clients words, “the new CEO is rolling out changes at a very high speed without considering ground realities. He has not once asked us whether the current teams can handle things coming at them in such a short space of time…”You get the drift.
He had put up with it for 5 months, “that’s nearly half a performance year- he said”. He didn’t want to have a mediocre to low performance appraisal & wondered if it was best to cut his losses, quit & move on.
I gave him enormous credit for being far sighted. He wasn’t just talking about the annoying 5 months but had thought ahead about the year-end appraisal & used that as a trigger to come for a conversation today. Not many professionals think that way.
Our engagement was once a week over 6 weeks. I am sharing below 3 super relevant check-ins you should make with yourself if you are contemplating changing jobs.

You know your specific Friction points best.
The reasons for friction at work will be unique in each case. A new CEO undermines current processes, an aggressive peer joins the team, you are not given the promotion, your boss questions you in a way that pisses the daylights out of you, a peer who used to be a confidante has become indifferent after his promotion.
I can share over a 100 reasons why your current workplace annoys you & causes friction for you. The goal is not to do that but to understand what becomes possible when you KNOW your friction points?
Knowing what annoys you & gets your back up at work, is GOLD.

Knowing what annoys you & gets your back up at work, is GOLD.
- It is GOLD because it tells you in a very laser focused way WHAT is needing attention.
This information is invaluable because you can act on it fast & dissolve the friction for yourself. Doing so means you become equipped at outsmarting it the next time it comes up. And come up- it will!
Because no workplace is immune from changes like the ones I mentioned above. Nothing matches the sense of victory like beating a tough, monumentally annoying situation on your own terms.
- It is also GOLD because it helps you save money.
Hear me out on this one. To outsmart a situation on your own terms is very different from surrendering to a situation.
Outsmarting makes you stand strong in the midst of the annoying situation with your head held high, find new perspectives & create laser focused tactics to ‘dis-annoy’ it for yourself.
Working with a capable coach who can see things from your perspective, understand your authentic operating style & help you tailor laser focused tactics so they jive with your natural self - is an idiot-proof way to outsmart situations. Weekly check-ins make you feel supported & are where you figure out how you will position your messages, emails & conversations through the next week.
Feeling supported is a BIG win in itself, but when you add the magic of laser focused tactics that feel easy to apply, ‘dis-annoying’ the situation becomes easy. Because you are equipped with what you will say if someone predictably says something to you or how you will tackle when your peer undermines you again.
Think of this as a micro-transformation. After each coaching session you become successively more equipped & confident at outwitting other people at work.
So where does saving Money come into all this - you might be wondering.
If you work with me, I help you create tactics that you can apply from the first session onwards. With very focused, outcomes that feel easy to apply. You get to your goals faster. Feeling instantly equipped means no money wasted in sitting around & endlessly discussing things with no action.
We roll our sleeves up & get to work straight away. Sometimes you may even have success in as few as 3-4 sessions.
If there is any such annoyance at work making you undercut your competence & not making you feel solid in yourself, book a 15 minute consult with me. In 4-6 sessions, you can forever outsmart your current friction point that is probably robbing your sleep at night.
So that’s the first nugget. Identify your GOLD (friction points). Invest in yourself. And outsmart the situation on your own terms.
The second area I encourage you to consider is that when the going gets tough, hanging about with known devils is not a bad strategy.
Whilst looking for a new job sounds & feels refreshing, but 3 months into it & annoyances will start popping up. It’s when the chips are down that we need to double down on the situation. Invest in yourself, get tactics you can apply to regain control of your career right in the middle of people that have you running for the door at the moment.
And here’ why this strategy of outsmarting ‘known devils’ works so well.
Because you know their quirks, asks, needs, insecurities, strengths, how they work & where they trip up (because no one’s perfect). This too is GOLD but when we are annoyed we OFTEN fail to see the opportunities knowing this rich information presents to us.
Contrast it to being amongst unknown devils. A new place, where the 1st 90 days may feel like a cool breeze on a warm sunny day, but come the 4thmonth & similar problems but now from unexpected people start to pop up. You don’t know your new colleagues well just yet.
This often creates a new types of problems. Should you soft touch big matters, what impression will new co-workers make in working with you. Who are the ‘in-crowd’, who are the gossipers, who are the social influencers. How can you go talk to. Does the always smiling peer, really worthy of your trust. We often tend to underestimate this cognitive load new jobs bring with them.
So don’t be in a rush to launch yourself into a set of new ‘unknown’ devils.
Outsmart & double down with a ‘known’ set of devils because it is in the ‘knowing’ that you are sat on GOLD. This GOLD cave is yours to dominate.
3. Above all else – you make yourself recession Proof
Once you master your craft at outsmarting the annoying situation right in the midst of those making it annoying for you, you experience a taste of victory that fills you up with inside out confidence that no matter what the next situation, you know HOW to outsmart it.
This knowing makes you forge your career ahead in the direction you want. Because you will have learnt that it’s not in the getting away lies your victory but in nailing your victory down using ALL the information available to you.
You also will see this so clearly after our sessions that people in any organization will come with their quirks & preferences. They can’t be bypassed, dodged or avoided. But knowing how to outsmart their quirks & preferences proofs you from job cuts & other difficult decisions companies often make.
Become recession proof is an art. I can show you how to master it in your authentic style.
